2) He hasn't eaten much, like they're said to do. I've offered him some veggies (Carrots, lettuce, broccoli, melon etc) mixed with some grass until he gets settled in, and then he's going to have more plants and grasses and things. Is not eating much a problem, or could it just be because it's winter? Hi Steve, I have a sulcata as well, although mine is not near as big as yours! Perhaps your tortoise isn't eating because he is a bit cool. Sulcata's don't hibernate like some other species do, so normal winter loss of appetite is not normal for them. Also, their diet should be around 75% grasses and 25% broadleaf weeds. Fruits are a definate no-no. It is very important for these guys to have lots of fiber in their diet. Most grocery veggies don't provide enough of this, and should only be offered on occasion. Also, spinach, cabbage, kale, and broccoli are high in oxalic acid, which binds up Ca, decreasing its availability. Alot of the veggies also contain poor ratios of Ca to P. Be sure you add Ca or Ca/Vit. D3 to their diet. I like to use cuttlebone, and either let them eat chunks, or scrape some to dust the food. Here are some websites that have reliable information, and lots of it:
