Museum hours Most of the Smithsonian museums are open 10 A.M. - 5:30 P.M. daily, except Christmas Day, December 25. Hours at the National Zoo are 9 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. daily for buildings, and 8 A.M. - 6 P.M. daily for grounds. Smithsonian Craft Show The 13th annual Smithsonian Craft Show, sponsored by the Women's Committee of the Smithsonian Associates, will be held April 27-30 at the National Building Museum, Fourth and F Streets, N.W., Washington, D.C. One hundred and twenty artists will exhibit and sell work in a variety of craft media. For information, admission fees and advance tickets, call (202) 357-4000. Musical Weekend The 23rd annual Smithsonian Musical Weekend will be held April 28-30. Highlights will include performances by the Miami City Ballet and the Smithsonian's Chamber Music Society; music and refreshments at the Mexican Embassy's Cultural Institute; and a jazz brunch at the Smithsonian Castle. Special April exhibits, events National Museum of American Art Jim Nutt (February 10 - May 21) Retrospective organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum surveys the internationally recognized painter's work. The Color of Abstraction (March 17 - August 27) Show highlights the museum's holdings of color field paintings, including works by such artists as Sam Gilliam, Gene Davis and Kenneth Noland. Renwick Gallery Full Deck Art Quilts (March 17 - April 30) A deck of playing cards was the inspiration for this unique show of quilt art, organized by quilt artist Sue Pierce and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. National Portrait Gallery Majestic in His Wrath: The Life of Frederick Douglass (through November 19) Exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of Douglass' death presents the story of his life and legacy. (See page 114) In Pursuit of the Butterfly: Portaits of James McNeill Whistler (April 7 - August 13) Exhibit traces the evolution of Whistler's self-constructed image as a popular icon in Victorian England. National Air and Space Museum Aerial Inspirations: Silk Batiks by Mary Edna Fraser (through June 4, 1995) Large-scale silk batiks portray artist's vision of land, sea and sky. Beyond the Limits: Flight Enters the Computer Age Major gallery explores the computer revolution in aerospace. Universe of Illusions (runs indefinitely) Einstein Planetarium show takes a look at some of the mysteries in the history of space exploration National Museum of Natural History Gem and Mineral Hall The Gem and Mineral Hall is closed for renovation until December 1996. The Hope Diamond is on view on the second floor of the Rotunda. Giant Squids Permanent exhibit showcases the world's largest invertibrates. Ocean Planet (April 22 - Jan. 2, 1996 Major exhibition examines the richness and complexity of earth's oceans - computer animation, dioramas, videos, artifacts, specimens, models. National Zoological Park Amazonia Permanent installation re-creates a microcosm of the world's largest rain forest and river habitat. National Museum of American History and they called us 'Colored' (through April 22) Photographs taken in 1914-1936 by two African-Americans present an intimate portrait of life in Seward, a town built by blacks who migrated to Oklahoma in the late 19th century. Science in American Life Permanent exhibit tracks advances and discoveries in science over the past 125 years, and features a hands-on science center. American Encounters Permanent exhibit focuses on the American Indian, Hispanic and Anglo-American cultures of New Mexico's Upper Rio Grande Valley. National Postal Museum Located next to Union Station on Capitol Hill, the new museum presents exhibitions tracing the history of the nation's mail service. Freer Gallery of Art Beyond Paper: Chinese Calligraphy on _object_s (through April 21) Clay, lacquer, _meta_l, jade, bamboo, wood and horn _object_s date from 7th to 19th century. On the River (April 1 - Jan. 1, 1996) Hanging scrolls, panels, handscrolls, album leaves and fans, dating from the 13th to the 19th century, illustrate everyday life along a river in China. Arthur M. Sackler Gallery A Basketmaker in Rural Japan (through July 23) Woven bamboo backpacks, fishing creels, kitchen storage baskets and containers by Japanese basketmaker Hiroshima Kazuo. Landscape as Culture: Photographs by Lois Conner (through May 30) Large-format platinum prints by the contemporary American-born photographer record the landscape of China and South Asia. National Museum of African Art Royal Benin Art in the Collection of the National Museum of African Art (runs indefinitely) Works from the 15th to the 19th century. Anacostia Museum Art Changes Things: The Art and Activism of Georgette Seabrooke Powell (through May 28) The work of the post-Harlem Renaissance artist - paintings, drawings, photographs, personal memoribilia. Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden Directions - Cindy Sherman: Film Stills (March 15 - June 25) Series of 70 photographs, from 1978 to 1980, suggests stills from Hitchcock-_style_ B movies and portrays artist in various disguises. The Collection Reviewed: Modern Art (runs indefinitely) Exhibition features works by George Bellows, Jean Dubuffet and others. Arts and Industries Building Discovery Theater Beanstalks, Beasts and Buffoons (April 4 - 29) Live theater for young audiences. Dillon Ripley Center, International Gallery Benedicte Wrensted: An Idaho Photographer in Focus (March 1 - April 2) Portraits taken by Danish-born Benedicte Wrensted in her Idaho studio in the late 19th century document Native Americans and European Americans. Heye Center, National Museum of the American Indian (New York) Creation's Journey: Masterworks of Native American Identity and Belief (runs indefinitely) First of three inaugural exhibitions celebrating the indigenous peoples of the Western Hemisphere. All Roads Are Good: Native Voices on Life and Culture (runs indefinitely) More than 300 _object_s, from Ojibwa pandolier bags to Kwakiutl wood carvings. Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum (New York) Kitsch to Corbusier: Wallpaper from the 1950s (April 11 - August 27) Designs drawn from the museum's collection reflect the postwar interest in modern art, European travel, teen culture, the burgeoning suburbs and technology.
