If the sacrifices are not needed (in the eyes of a leader) they will not ask for what they believe is not required. Sacrifices are very unpopular, and most leaders - of both parties, BTW - don't have the courage ot ask for them. Yep. We need look no further than the current race for the Presidency to see that. Most of us know that this government has some serious finanicial problems. Has Obama or McCain made any serious proposals to address and proposed a solution to these problems? No, they have not. But to try to be fair, you cannot really blame them, because as much as we the people complain about what the problems are, we do not want to hear that in order to solve the problem, requires sacrificies on our part. It is okay if someone else has to make the sacrifice, but not us. But it also shows a lack of what John Kennedy profiled in his book Profiles in Courage.
