Here is Longman's dictionary's 1st definition of 'cult': (The group of people that follow) a system of worship, esp. one that is different from the usual and established forms of religion in a paricular society. I think this could be applied to this case.

It's normally best to check all the definitions in the dictionary before using a word. In current American (USA) usage, cult is definitely a derogatory thing to say about someone else's religion. Consider the 2nd & 3rd definitions in the American Heritage Dictionary: cult 2.a. A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or bogus. b. Followers of such a religion or sect. 3.a. Obsessive devotion or veneration for a person, principle, or ideal, esp. when regarded as a fad. b. The _object_ of such devotion. The original poster may have meant the first definition, but some readers understood the other meanings instead. So you mean you'd better not use 'bog' because some Brits would understand 'toilets' ?

I think yhose who complain should do the checking (they've got less words to look up in the dictionary than s.o. writing a whole message). Besides, my dictionary (Longman' s Dictionary of ***contemporary*** English) doesn't list the definitions you gave. - OK, it's British, but usually lists US definitions aswell. And you cannot take every regionalism into account
