I'm new to this forum but i was wondering if someone could enlighten me on this controversial subject that protein leads to renal failure.  I've been told that there are NO studies that support this effect for healthy kidneys.  I work out alot and take alot of protein so i was curious if someone could at least point me in the right direction.  Thank you

By the way, something I didn't mention is that eating a lot of protein causes you to lose protein in the urine.  This is a cardinal symptom of nephrotic syndrome, which can lead to renal failure.  This might cause confusion.  But it's 'normal' to lose protein in the urine if you have far too much of it in the blood. 0-150mg per 24 hours is normal protein loss. Over 3000mg/24 hr is nephrotic range proteinuria.

I consumer about 1gram of protein for lb of body weight (i weight 200 lbs and eat 200g of protein supplemented with whey protein).  Will this put me in the nephrotic range and cause damage?   I do this to put on quick muscle about twice a year for 2 months and works extremly well, but i dont want to do this at the expense of my long term health.   Thanks for your responses, i greatly appreciate it

Eating protein DOES NOT CAUSE proteinuria (sorry for shouting), even when large amounts are consumed. Low-protein diets are quickly going out of favor for pre-dialysis kidney patients as numerous studies have shown no benefit. The numbers I gave are for protein 'lost' in urine. This is usually caused by a malfunction of the glomeruli (this is a pretty non-specific de_script_ion) and what causes this is largely unknown. One cause mentioned is high blood pressure, though high blood pressure is often caused by kidney damage. Over all, keeping the blood pressure within normal range is a good idea, no matter what else is going on. Diabetes can also cause kidney damage, as well as long term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Some kidney disease, however, just seems to happen ( idiopathic disease). Not a doctor, just a kidney patient.
