[Note: This is an offshoot post of 'drew's initial Southern Lad thread.] So I was reading the Southern Lad thread, and realized that a lot of people are sincerely opposed to online relationships, claiming that they're not valid or stable or (insert reason here). I was in an online-_base_d relationship for three months, and it was a wonderfully terrific experience. I don't believe the people who say that it isn't as valid because there's distance (or modems) involved, or the people who find it odd that people can connect romantically over cyberspace. More power to 'drew and anyone else who can find happiness over their computer. ~ Nick

Well, it's not necessarily find[ing] happiness over their computer , but finding the seed of such happiness there.  You can't _base_ an entire relationship -only- on words on a screen, but they can convince you that you need to learn more about this other person.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.   I'm not sure about a love relationship in this context

i'm doing a study in march over college student's perceptions of internet relationships.  i've combed through the literature, and an attitudinal study over that has not been done before. i'm breaking ground, i guess  whatever i find out, i'll let you guys know around april/early may. I think online relationships can be the worst for inexperienced, insecure, and lonely young people. I have now seen two of my friends practically throw their lives away for online relationships, putting total financial and emotional dependency on this person that they've met only a couple times and don't even know if they will connect with on a day-to-day basis. There _is_ a difference between real relationships and online ones, and one needs to recognize the difference before they start sacrificing huge parts of themselves. TPTB. The ******* sadists. There _is_ a difference between real relationships and online ones, and one needs to recognize the difference before they start sacrificing huge parts of themselves. My question is: if your inexperienced, insecure, and lonely friends had met Bloodsucker X in a bar, would they be any different?  Someone who's desperate for <whatever is gonna do that, no matter how they found the other person.  And the Bloodsucker is gonna take advantage of that, again no matter how they found the person. /nad
