If you look at the numbers, a very large number of US citizens are not native English speakers anyway, whereas the numbers Timmy quotes ignore the Irish, Canadians, Aussies, Kiwis, Springboks, Malaysians, Singaporeans, HK Chinese, Indians, Pakistanis, Caribbeans, BVIslanders, Bermudans, etc. etc. who are native english speakers, and use standard english, rather than the US version which was /deliberately/ mis-spelt by Mr Webster.  I did some numbers on this ages ago, the yanks are nowhere near any kind of majority.  Timmy doesn't like facts, though. Why don't you publish your numbers here?  They should be interesting.   There are over 215 million native English speakers in the US (around 80% of the adult population). For your claim that US native speakers aren't a majority to be correct, you need to find a total of at least 430 million *native* English speakers.  Almost all published studies place the number between 309 million and 380 million. I suspect that you are counting non-native speakers.

I've just had a quick flick through Great Ex, Hard Times & The Cricket on the Hearth and can find plenty of favourite and honour spelt properly, along with learnt and knelt, but I've found neither color nor colour... I'll bet you can find a Dickens concordance on the web and settle the issue. It usually depends on where books were published as to the spellings used.  Books published outside the US would have standard spellings, those inside, would have US spellings.  I can't see that Dickens' books would be different in this respect.

By that logic, Brazilians are Americans, etc.  Yes, they all live in North or South or Central America, but get real.  The colloquial meaning is US citizen . Wow, the arrogance of yanks.   There are many counties located in the Americas, the US being only one. Most Canadians I know are sick to the back teeth of this kind of arrogance. America is a continent.  Or, the Americas are a continent, if you prefer.
