Good afternoon all, I recently bought a map from a second-hand bookshop around here, Hagstrom's Map of New York City - 1949 Edition(Price 35c) - despite its name, it only covers Manhattan. It cost me Aus$3 (approx. US$2) and it's a fold-out street map - actually two fold-out street maps, one for the southern half of Manhattan and one for the northern half, each map glued to the cardboard cover. It's a fascinating map, but I have a few questions, some of which are OT on MTR but I'd like to be answered anyway: (1) There are two pairs of dashed lines going east-west across Manhattan connecting the Lincoln Tunnels and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. One pair of dashed lines is shown along 38th Street, the other is shown along 37th Street. Do these dashed lines represent a planned cross-Manhattan tunnelled freeway? (2) In Central Park, there are three roads that go east-west, and they appear to actually go UNDER the other roads in the parklands. The southernmost is labelled Transverse Road No. 1 , then there's Transverse Road No. 2 and the northernmost road isn't labelled at all. All three have bus routes drawn along them. Are these roads tunneled, or just depressed? Do they still exist? (3) Where Broadway, 34th Street and Ave. of the Americas meet, is shown as both Herald Sq. and Greeley Sq. Are these one and the same? (4) Why does/did the borough boundary at the very northern tip of Manhattan deviate from the Harlem River so Manhattan actually includes a small chunk of the Bronx? (5) All subway lines in Manhattan are shown - all of them are in red (except Elevated LInes which are black), but they use different symbology for different types of lines. The legend shows Subway Lines (IRT West Side) , Subway Lines (IRT East Side) , Subway Lines (BMT) and Subway Lines (IND) . What do IRT, BMT and IND mean? (6) Bus routes are shown as thin red lines, but there are also thin dashed lines too - the legend says these are Surface Lines . I assume that these are tramway lines (what Americans usually call streetcars )? (7) How do you pronounce Spuyten Duyvil ? (8) Unfortunately, no US or NY SR highway numbers are shown. Were there any significant numbered highways on Manhattan in 1949? Your help with these questions would be vastly appreciated. If anybody wants to ask questions about what's on this map, please feel free - I find it a very interesting map, and of excellent quality of cartography and physical condition too (considering it's 54 years old), not to mention the level of detail (e.g. the company that owns each wharf is listed; there's a postcode boundary inset map; a house numbering guide; etc.) Regards, Bradley.

Good afternoon all, (5) All subway lines in Manhattan are shown - all of them are in red (except Elevated LInes which are black), but they use different symbology for different types of lines. The legend shows Subway Lines (IRT West Side) , Subway Lines (IRT East Side) , Subway Lines (BMT) and Subway Lines (IND) . What do IRT, BMT and IND mean? IRT = Interboro Rapid Transit. New York's first Subway. August       Belmont's franchise. BMT = Brooklyn Manhattan Transit, franchise. Formerly BRT       (Brooklyn Rapid Transit) operator of the Brooklyn elevated       and subway franchise that had lines in Manhattan. IND = Independent subway. City built and operated subway.

(8) Unfortunately, no US or NY SR highway numbers are shown. Were there any significant numbered highways on Manhattan in 1949? From an old Scoony-Mobil map of NYC I have:  NY 1A used to come down 1st and 2nd Avenues and NY 22 came down Park Avenue.  NY 27 came over the Williamsburg Bridge into Lower Manhattan, with NY 27A and NY 9A meeting at the Canal Street exit of the former West Side Elevated Highway.

there any significant numbered highways on Manhattan in 1949? From an old Scoony-Mobil map of NYC I have:  NY 1A used to come down 1st and 2nd Avenues and NY 22 came down Park Avenue.  NY 27 came over the Williamsburg Bridge into Lower Manhattan, with NY 27A and NY 9A meeting at the Canal Street exit of the former West Side Elevated Highway. Wouldn't US 1/9 have been using the George Washington Bridge routing by then (in which case US 9 would be using Broadway in upper Manhattan from the Bridge North, as it does now)

the Canal Street exit of the former West Side Elevated Highway. Wouldn't US 1/9 have been using the George Washington Bridge routing by then (in which case US 9 would be using Broadway in upper Manhattan from the Bridge North, as it does now) Yes, US 1 crossed northern Manhattan with US 9 joining it where it does currently to cross the GWB.
