I was wondering what the Relief Society was supposed to relieve. Did a lot of 19th century Protestant churches have relief societies for women? Would you believe that I taught a lesson in Relief Society about Relief Society last month? Actually the idea for a woman's organization in the church began when a group of women got together to sew shirts for the men who were building the temple in Nauvoo. They drafted a plan to govern themselves in a way typical of women's groups of the time, but when they consulted Joseph Smith he offered to organize them in a manor similar to that of the priesthood. On March 17, 1842 the first relief society was organized. The _object_ive stated by J. Smith was the relief of the poor, the destitute, the widow and the orphan, and for the exercise of all benevolent purposes. One of the things I found interesting was that women had to apply for membership when it was first organized. Much of the information I found in Church History in the Fulness of Times. My question which the book didn't detail is what was the criteria for membership? Anyone every heard or read about this? Linda

Suffering. Then I'd say that the priesthood is actually just a distraction for the Church. The real meat and potatoes is in the relief society. : Suffering. Actually, this week's quorum lesson from the Brigham Young handbook was on the purpose and origin of the Relief Society (which originally was called the Female Relief Society.) I certainly learned a lot from it, including that the RS was dissolved and reformed a couple of times and that Brigham Young was an opponent of government welfare back when Republicans weren't cool

That's cool, it's good to know that leaders of the church opposed Corporate Welfare in the 1980's when republicans weren't cool.
