Crock-Pot recipes for single eaters Karola Saekel Wednesday, March 21, 2007 in the San Francisco Chronicle Singles and households of two don't have an easy time with most   cookbooks. Recipes are usually tailored for four, six, sometimes even   eight servings, and a lot of conveniences are not all that convenient   for them. The slow cooker, friend of busy people who want to come   home to a ready-to-eat hot meal, is one of the utensils pretty much   out of their reach, unless they like a lot of leftovers. Bay Area award-winning cookbook author Beth Hensperger has taken pity   upon this group and has written a follow-up of her well-received Not   Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook, published two years ago. The new   book is, a little confusingly, called Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker   Recipes for Two, and is crafted exclusively for the small crock pot   of anywhere from 1 1/2 to 3-quart capacity. These pots are inexpensive, often under $20, though cooks may have to   call or look around to find them, since many cookware stores stock   mostly the familiar large (up to 7 quarts) slow cookers. To help readers find the small pots, the book includes the names,   phone numbers and Web sites of three manufacturers that offer these   small appliances. As Hensperger and her coauthor on the earlier book, Julie Kaufmann,   did in that volume, she has created recipes that dovetail with modern   tastes and avoid the tired dishes recommended for old-time (your   mother's) crock pots, which relied heavily on canned soups and   dehydrated this and that. To be sure, those recipes provided   serviceable, easy meals, but that's about all you could say for them. Hensperger does utilize some convenience ingredients, such as canned   broth or ready-made mole from a jar for a chicken thigh mole that   makes a great meal with the addition of cooked white rice and a   salad. But for the most part, recipes call for fresh ingredients and   cater to modern tastes and nutrition concerns.
