My son and I went out to PIR today to watch Al Unser test his new G Force. Buzz Calkins was also testing in his new 2000 Dallara.  The G Force looks a little different this year with a slightly raised nose (like F1), and a triangular intake.  However, it doesn't look as aerodynamically slick as the Dallara.  Both Junior and Buzz were running around the mid 21's with a few laps in the low 21's.  Both cars look extremely stable, I didn't see one bobble all morning.  Both cars looked glued through the corners.  They were both carrying a lot of speed into 1 and 3 and were on the throttle hard througout the corners.  It was great to watch. Now I happen to be a CART fan, however, I have also gone to all the IRL races at PIR.  I can tell you that the new Oldsmobile engines with the 180 degree cranks are the sweetest sounding engines I have ever heard (maybe second only to a Ferrari 12 cylinder).  Instead of the off-song pitch, they make a pure tone more like a 3.5 litre Cosworth V8, however, without the burbling and popping the Cosworth used to make when you got off the throttle.  I still hope that IRL and CART get back together because I want to have all the best drivers at Indy.  I also hope the 3.5 litre naturally aspirated engines become the standard. I wouldn't say the G-Force nose looks like an F1 nose. More like the 97 Lola CART car in Road Course configuration. Over all it is a pretty radical departure from anything built under IRL Rules so far. As for the Dallara. I can't tell if I'm looking at the new one or the old one in the Pics on the IRL site. I can't seem to find any pics of the R&S (Reynard). I listend to that MP3 of the new motor too. About 1000 times better than the old engine note.

I'm writing from my parent's computer, but this is Glenn again.  I would agree that the new G-Force nose looks more like the 97 Lola than an F1 car.  It's not as radical as an F1 nose.  Personally, I don't like the look, it's too cluttered.  Also, the sidepods are higher and looks as if the frontal area is greater and thus the drag higher.  As far as the sound, I agree that the MP3 on the website sounds good, but it pales in comparison to listining to it in person.  It put chills down my spine.  I also agree that the car appears to be faster than last years cars even though they were slower.  They just sound faster.  Even though I'm a CART fan, I am looking forward to this year's IRL race at PIR.  Al Junior will be there, plus listening to 20 of these cars will be a pleasure.
