He was ALWAYS a xtian. Evolution does not contradict xtianity, but rather a literal interpretation of Genesis. And a literal interpretation of Genesis is only adhered to by a few offshoot religions. They just happen to be real noisy, and real obnoxious, and real pig-headed about their erroneous beliefs. The actual urban legend is that Darwin RECANTED his theory of evolution on his deathbed. That is also untrue. The rumor was spread by a casual acquaintance of Darwin's (a fundie, as it happens) after his death. She had not seen Darwin in several months, and was not present at his deathbed. Darwin's sister, who WAS present at her brother's deathbed, maintained until her death many years later that the story was untrue, and that her brother died believing that what he had put forth in Origin of the Species was accurate.
