Well, I understand that the ironing was for straitening the hair and not drying it.. I asked because I blow-dry my hair strait since it is horribly curly, which is why I was curious to know if they had blow dryers back then.. Although they dont actually use regular irons anymore on hair, they still do it with hot combs, which is the same thing as ironing..

Ironing USED to be for straighting hair.  When I was a teenager I got up every morning before school to iron my older sister's curly hair straight so it would hang with a part down the middle and straight down, ala Streisand as she is pictured on The Forum album. THAT was THE look then and every female pop and rock singer worked to look that way: Joplin, Cher, Michele Phillips and Cass Elliott, even Tina Turner (well, she wore a wig then just as she does today), Twiggy, Shelly Fabrae (sp? She sang Johnny Angel), and the Downtown girl (whatzhername?).  My poor sister...   We owned a cleaners and I was trained early to use a damp cloth to press wool, silk and non-cotton fabrics but if I was in a hurry (which we always were because I have five brothers and a single older sister) my sister would have to plant her head on the ironing board and I'd quickly run an iron over it.  On MANY occasions that iron was too hot and if I failed throw a clean T towel (kitchen towel made of cotton used to dry the dishes) over the hair/board before ironing the hair flat it would quickly singe, smoke and smell.   Today my hair is so long I keep it cut when it reaches the bottom of my shirt pockets (probably 2.5-2.75 feet long) while my sister keeps hers short and naturally curly.  She hates me, of course because she is the only child in the entire family with very dark brunette (near black) hair while the rest of us are Scandanavian toe-head blonds.  Go figger, huh? Today I use a blow dryer! Bud

Dear Bud, Thanks for the great story!  I canremember the same problems growing up.  My Hair was straight , and my sisters was very curly.  I also came from a large family ofsiblings (5) I am the only blond, the rest are dkbrown with red highlights.!  GO figure,  my twins and 20 yr old are all blonds, while all of my neices and nephwes have very dark hair.  I love Barbra's hair over the years.  From the way she wore it in The way we were, to the b eautiful chin-length today.  Does anyone know if Brabra has her hair highlited or touched up to keep it the beautiful color that is is?
