Over the years, whenever someone's asked this question in the group, it's been stated that it was a key/option on a mellotron.  Apparently it's also appeared on songs by other groups (I think Pink Floyd was an example)...

Where did the intro on Bungalow Bill come from? I know it isn't a Beatle or a session musician. John R. It was apparently one of the demo tapes that came with John's Mellotron. I believe the guitarist has been located. I believe the common concensus is that the guitarist from the mellotron loop used on Bungalow Bill is Django Reinhardt. Forgive me if I just butchered his name. I checked my notes and found my reference:   According to researcher Danny Caccavo, it's Eric Cook, an Australian   session guitarist. The excerpt was included as one of the keys in   the recorded offerings on the mellotron, an instrument often used by   the Fabs.     saki, rmb.music.beatles The Official FAQ (NEMS) doesn't answer the question, but a 1998 version does: http://beatles.cselt.stet.it/rmb/miniFAQ.html Here's a web page http://banana.portland.co.uk/bungalow.html on the subject, which reports its use  on King Crimson's live album EPITAPH . I strongly believe the Beatles started the progressive rock movement in 1966 or 1967.  However, it was bands like King Crimson who took the torch and ran with it and help clearly define the genre as it is known today. Check out those 2 wonderful, amazing King Crimson CD's...but never forget...the seed was planted by the Beatles.  The idea that you could take music anywhere, push any boundary, and explore any room was really started by the Beatles. I love them for that. Could you tell me a little more about where you see the connections between 1966/1967 Beatles and Progressive Rock. I don't know much about this form of rock, but I'd be interested to hear more. Ian

The Beatles broke down so many creative barriers during the '66/'67 period and naturally soon therafter everyone else followed.  Everyone found out that it was ok to experiment with any musical direction you wanted to explore.  Unfortunately many bands failed at this and some rather embarrasing albums (especially in America) came out at this time.

I believe the guitarist has been located. Ian As I revealed a few  years back, the guitarist's name was Erik Cooke.   Austrailian, I believe. It wasn't a demo tape, but part of the Spanish Guitar rhythm section on the Mellotron left-hand keyboard. As someone mentioned, yes, you can hear more of the Spanish guitar stuff on King Crimson's Epitaph cd set from the Live '69 stuff.  Ian McDonald used to mess with the rhythm section a bit. Mike Pinder of the Moodies had the rhythm section tapes removed, and put in more regular sounds.  A bit more practical. DC
