I'm a teacher in a low economic school in Mississippi. I'm also having trouble paying back my student loan on my low salary. I recall hearing about a program that can assist teachers who are teaching in low income areas with loan repayment. However, I can't find any info on the net about such a program. I would appreciate it if anyone knows about such a program and can give me some ideas about how to find out more about this.. Thanks in advance, Theresa

It sounds to me like your talking about the Perkins Loan Program (formerly called the NDSL Program).  If you took out one of these loans to finance your education then you could possibly qualify to have all or a portion of your loan cancelled if you are teaching in qualified low-income school. If you have one of these loans the money would have been lent to you by your college or university - you should contact them to see if you eligible for such a cancellation.   Regardless of what type of loan you have, you should contact the lender or current holder of your loan and explain the difficulties that your experiencing - they will try and work with you.  It would be very unfortunate if you compromised your loan in anyway - the effects on your credit could create problems for you in the future.
